Atlantic City, NJ (Sports Network) - Chaz Williams scored 20 points and had 10 assists to lead Massachusetts past top-seeded Temple, 77-71, in quarterfinal action of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Boardwalk Hall. Jesse Morgan added 21 points for the eighth-seeded Minutemen (22-10), who have now won three straight and will play St. Bonaventure on Saturday. UMass, which defeated Duquesne in a first-round matchup on Tuesday, is trying to get back to the final round of the event for the first time since losing to the Owls back in 2001. Khalif Wyatt had 15 points for the 21st-ranked Owls (24-7), who won the leagues regular season title for a record 10th time, but became the second straight top-seed to bow out in their first game. Xavier was also a quarterfinal loser last year as the No. 1 seed. "I would like to congratulate UMass, I thought they played well, I would like to congratulate Atlantic City and the Atlantic 10 for what would have been a good weekend for us in terms of sticking around for a few days but we didnt do a good enough job today," said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. Trailing by five at the break, UMass snatched control of the contest and went up by 10 with a 15-0 run to start the second half. Temple, though, after being held scoreless through the first five minutes out of the break, came all the way back and managed to re-take the lead and went by four, 61-57, on a Juan Fernandez three-pointer. Unrattled, though, Williams scored the next five points for the Minutemen, who eventually pushed their lead back to five on a pair of Terrell Vinson free throws with 1:59 left. Temple managed to cut the deficit back to two, 73-71, on a Wyatt jumper with 27 seconds remaining, but Williams hit two free throws at the other end. After a Temple miss on its ensuing possession, Morgan put the game away with two more from the charity stripe, sealing the six-point upset win for UMass. "I thought it was a toughness thing," UMass head coach Derek Kellogg said. "I thought if we could rebound the basketball and not turn the ball over and match their toughness, I thought we would have a chance in the second half. Im happy that our guys would play with a little more toughness." UMass, which had lost to Temple in overtime just last week, is shooting for its sixth tournament championship. The Minutemens five titles are second only to Temples nine. Temple wrestled early control of the contest midway through the first half by going inside. The Owls also took advantage of six straight UMass misses to go up 22-13 on a Ramone Moore jumper with 8:32 left in the half. The Minutemen started to chip away, though, and managed to cut the deficit to four a few times, but went into the break trailing, 36-31. Wyatt led the Owls with eight points through the first 20 minutes, while T.J. Dileo held Williams in check, limiting him to just seven points on 2-of-6 shooting. St. Bonaventure 71, St. Josephs 68 Atlantic City, NJ (Sports Network) - Andrew Nicholson made the go-ahead free throw with 1 1/2 minutes remaining and recorded a block in the final seconds, lifting St. Bonaventure over the Saint Josephs Hawks, 71-68, in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Nicholson ended with 25 points and 10 rebounds for the fourth-seeded Bonnies (18-11), who have recorded the most wins in a season since 2001. Charlon Kloof added 19 points. Still in search of their first-ever Atlantic 10 playoff title, the Bonnies will play UMass -- which toppled Temple earlier on Friday -- in a Saturday semifinal. St. Bonaventure has advanced to the semis of this tourney for the first time since 2000. Carl Jones tallied 24 points for the fifth-seeded Hawks (20-13), who failed to build off an 80-64 win over Charlotte in the first round on Thursday. Langston Galloway and Daryus Quarles each had 12 points. With the score tied at 68-68, Nicholson made 1-of-2 from the foul line to give the Bonnies a one-point lead with 1:32 to play. St. Josephs had the ball after Jones and Nicholson each missed jumpers. The Hawks took a timeout with 36.8 seconds remaining and on the ensuing possession, Galloway drove to the lane and was called for a charge. Kloof made 1-of-2 from the line with 17.2 ticks left on the clock to give St. Bonaventure a 70-68 margin. Jones tried to get a shot off from the baseline at the other end, but Nicholson came up with a big block. Matthew Wright was fouled with less than a second remaining and made 1-of-2 free throws, accounting for the final margin. Saint Louis 78, La Salle 71 Atlantic City, NJ (Sports Network) - Mike McCall Jr. led the way with 16 points as the Saint Louis Billikens downed the La Salle Explorers, 78-71, in an Atlantic 10 Tournament quarterfinal at Boardwalk Hall. Kwamain Mitchell added 15 points and seven assists for the Billikens (25-6), while Brian Conklin finished with 14 points and Jordair Jett chipped in 13 points. Earl Pettis led the Explorers (21-12) with 18 points, while Ramon Galloway scored 14 points and Tyreek Duren finished with 13 points. Saint Louis jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the opening minutes. La Salle was able to counter with 11-straight points to cut their deficit 14-13, but the Billikens were able to maintain their advantage for the rest of the half and took a 35-29 lead into the break. Saint Louis shot 44.8 percent in the first half, including 5-of-12 from beyond the arc. La Salle struggled, making only 37.5 percent of their field goals, but did connect on 4-of-9 from three-point range. After halftime, the Explorers improved their shooting efficiency from the floor, and hit on 54.2 percent of their attempts. Saint Louis stayed consistent and shot 44.4 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. Saint Louis led by 12 points midway through the second half, but La Salle recovered and again trailed by only one, 57-56, with under five minutes to play, but they would get no closer, as the Billikens held on for the victory. Saint Louis outscored La Salle in the paint, 30-18. The Explorers were able to convert the Billikens 15 turnovers into 17 points.
