From 1970 to 1995, they played independently, losing in fourteen of those years. They did 9 years with Conference USA from 1996 to 2004 and lost in 3 of those 9 years. From 2005 until the present they have played in the Big East Conference.
Since 1933 the team has taken eleven conference titles. They have participated in 12 Bowl games, the first one played in 1947. In six of those games, they won. In various NCAA tournaments they have posted three third placers won two championships. These trophies were given for 1961 and 1962 and in those games they were coached by Ed Jucker.
