MANCHESTER, England -- Sergio Agueros late hat trick rescued Manchester City from FA Cup humiliation at the hands of second-tier Watford, ushering the Premier League title favourites into the fifth round along with Liverpool and Everton on Saturday. The biggest shock of this seasons competition was on when Watford took a 2-0 lead after 30 minutes at Etihad Stadium, only for a remarkable Aguero-led comeback by City in the final half-hour. The Argentina striker produced clinical finishes in the 60th and 79th minutes to level the score before Aleksandar Kolarov put City in front in the 87th. Aguero completed his hat trick in injury time, keeping Manuel Pellegrinis side in contention for silverware on four fronts this season. "I wanted to change all of my players at halftime, all 11 of them," Pellegrini said. "The whole team was a disaster in the first half." There were no such worries for Liverpool, which beat second-tier Bournemouth 2-0 away courtesy of goals by Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge, and Everton, which eased past third-tier Stevenage 4-0 largely thanks to Steven Naismiths first-half brace. Evertons victory was marred by a suspected broken left leg suffered by Coast Rica international Bryan Oviedo, which could rule him out of the World Cup this summer. Premier League teams Southampton, Cardiff, Swansea, Hull and Sunderland -- a 1-0 winner over non-league side Kidderminster -- also advanced but Crystal Palace, which is fighting relegation in the top flight, was eliminated after losing 2-1 at defending champion Wigan. With Watfords starting lineup costing 500,000 pounds ($825,000) and Citys bench alone worth 84 million pounds ($140 million), few gave the visitors a chance at the Etihad even though City fielded a weakened starting team ahead of Wednesdays Premier League match at Tottenham. Yet Watford, a 33-1 shot with British bookmakers to beat City, stunned home fans by going into a 21st-minute lead through Fernando Forestieri before Troy Deeney made it 2-0 after 30 minutes. By the time Aguero scored his first goal, City had four players up front and had resorted to an all-out attack mode. The striker then produced another superb finish to equalize with 11 minutes left and Watfords hopes of a replay were dashed when its goalkeeper, Jonathan Bond, let Kolarovs shot dribble from his grasp into the net. Aguero capped the fightback by heading in Jesus Navas cross for his 25th goal of the season, keeping up Citys average of four goals per home game this campaign. "People spoke about us losing 10-0 or 11-0 -- nobody gave us a chance," Deeney said. "This is one of the biggest teams in the world but we went out there with no fear." In 19 matches at the Etihad, only European champion Bayern Munich has left with a victory. City has won the other 18. Arsenal began the fourth round with a comfortable 4-0 win over Coventry on Friday and Liverpool fielded a full-strength side to also enjoy an easy victory, with Moses opening the scoring in the 26th minute. Luis Suarez set up that goal and also provided the assist for Sturridge, who ran onto the Uruguay strikers pass and slotted into the corner in the 60th. Sturridge has now scored in three straight matches since returning from nearly two months out through injury. "The tradition in the FA Cup for Liverpool is huge and we want to pay respect to the competition because we want to get to the final and win it if we can," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. At Stevenage, Johnny Heitinga and Magaye Gueye were the other scorers for Everton, whose manager Roberto Martinez won the FA Cup with Wigan last season. The result was overshadowed, though, by the horrific-looking injury to Oviedo in the 14th minute. Oviedo was taken to hospital and Everton tweeted that he has a suspected broken leg. Non-league Kidderminsters run to the last 32 has been the feelgood story of this seasons competition but it came to an end at Sunderland, which was playing three days after beating Manchester United on penalties to reach the League Cup final against Man City. Charis Mavrias scored the only goal in the fifth minute. Southampton beat Yeovil 2-0, Swansea won 2-1 at Birmingham, Hull defeated Southend 2-0 and Cardiff was a 1-0 winner at Bolton. Despite having lost a pair of games already, the Sooners are actually ranked one spot higher than the Huskies due to the tougher competition on the schedule in the early going. Oklahoma already has victories over UCLA and Butler, with the teams defeats coming against Creighton (65-63) and Wisconsin (69-56). Since the setback to the second-ranked Badgers late last month, Oklahoma has responded with three consecutive wins, the most recent being an 85-53 thrashing of in-state rival Oral Roberts on Tuesday. As for the Huskies, they are one of only a handful programs still undefeated heading into the weekend. The team is perfect through nine games for the first time since 2005-06 when they started 11-0 under head coach Lorenzo Romar, who is now in his 13th season in Seattle. While the team does have an impressive win against San Diego State (49-36) a couple weeks back, more recent wins over Eastern Washington and Grambling have not carried as much weight. This is just the fourth meeting between the two programs, with the Sooners having won two of the previous three. However, the most recent encounter was won by Washington, 96-91, during the Great Alaska Shootout back in 2004. Oral Roberts led by a basket early in the game against the Sooners, but that advantage was short-lived as the visitors made a total of just 10 field goals in the first half and shot 33.3 percent for the game, en route to the 32-point blowout loss. Aside from Jordan Woodard who tallied eight points, to go along with eight assists, every Oklahoma starter scored in double figures led by Buddy Hield with 16 points and TaShawn Thomas with 14. Isaiah Cousins and Ryan SSpangler both dropped in 13 points, the latter also clearing 10 rebounds -- all at the defensive end of the floor.dddddddddddd Hield currently leads four players scoring in double figures with his 16.0 ppg, although he is shooting just 38.3 percent from the floor. He makes up for that somewhat with his 37.7 percent accuracy behind the 3-point line, while clearing 5.4 rpg. Spangler has three double-doubles on the season and is close to averaging one at the moment with 10.0 ppg and 8.4 rpg. While the defense was staunch against Grambling, giving up only 38 points, thats still more than the nationally-ranked Aztecs tallied back on Dec, 7. Nevertheless, Washington ran all over the Tigers by forcing 17 turnovers and holding the visitors to only 23.3 percent shooting from the field as they built a massive 45-13 advantage at the break and continued to run away in the second half on Wednesday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. Shawn Kemp Jr. scored a game-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor, followed by Andrew Andrews with 16 points, converting 4-of-8 beyond the arc. Off the bench the Huskies were given a huge lift by Robert Upshaw and his double-double consisting of 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, while Mike Anderson responded with 10 points, six boards and five assists. Bidding for a double-double of his own was Nigel Williams-Goss with nine points and a game- high 11 assists. Williams-Goss has shown himself to be a complete player, outside of his mere 25.8 percent shooting beyond the arc, as he leads Washington in scoring (14.6 ppg) and assists (62) and is also one of the better rebounders on the squad with 5.4 rpg. Upshaw, who has come off the bench in all nine games, is responsible for 10.9 ppg and a team-high 7.1 rpg, not to mention a total of 43 blocked shots, placing him among the nations leaders in that category entering the weekend. wholesale jerseys authentic wholesale jerseys store cheap jerseys Cheap Jerseys china wholesale jerseys ' ' ' |
